About SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio

SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio is a professional dashboarding application tool in the SAP BI suite and is the premium alternative to BEx Web & BEx Web Application Designer. SAP Business Objects Design Studio allows for intuitive design of centrally governable analytic content ranging from simplified templates via guided analytics to sophisticated OLAP applications and aggregated dashboards. The product features out-of-the box iPad and iPhone support, state-of-the art HTML5 UI, seamless application theming, a WYSIWYG Eclipse-based designer, full & native support of SAP BW BEx queries, direct connectivity to SAP HANA as well as an advanced scripting engine. For further information on positioning and roadmap for Design Studio refer to SCN Community Page for Design Studio.

Purpose of the Component SDK beta program

The Component SDK beta program is targeting SAP Customers and Partners who want to create new visualizations in SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio. Component SDK (Software Development Kit) is allowing to create new Web Components for data visualization based on the same data sources which can be used in native components – SAP BW and SAP HANA.

Scope of the Component SDK beta program

The scope of this beta program is ONLY the component SDK. There are NO additional features of Design Studio 1.2 in the offered package. The package is containing ONLY the Design Studio client (eclipse based development environment) and required documentation for Component SDK.

The component SDK is allowing creation of new components, it is not possible to modify or extend the standard built in components in the tool.

Please also take into account that the Design Studio SDK in the Design Studio 1.2 timeframe will require the BI platform (4.0 SP5+ or 4.1 SP0+) for deployment. Running the SDK on NetWeaver is planned for Design Studio 1.3.

Legal requirements for the Component SDK beta program

For the participation in the component SDK you have to own a valid license for SBOP Design Studio. You can check this by going to Product Availability Matrix for SBOP Design Studio 1.1 and trying to download the software or asking your SAP business partner. If you do not have a valid license for SBOP Design Studio, please do not apply for the beta program – contact your SAP business partner for clarification of any further options.

The beta software can be used for test and evaluation purposes only, and cannot be used in production environments.

Timeline of the Component SDK beta program

Registration is open now, registration deadline is July 30th 2013.

The Component SDK beta program starts at July 30th 2013 and will end by October 25th 2013.

Any feedback to the functionality (proposed extension, improvements) can be given by August 9th 2013, nevertheless even then there is no confirmation about inclusion of this feedback in the release 1.2, but the feedback will be integrated in release 1.3 planning phase.

As component developer you will be able to…

  • define new components with corresponding parameters and script functions which will be visible in Design Studio
  • define how the new component should react with data sources
  • define how the component update should be processed
  • define own visualization based on HTML 5 and Java Script framework (visualization is implemented in browser environment)
  • publish the component on the server Add-Ons (this part is not included in this Beta, but will be provided on RTC time)

Project requirements for Component SDK beta participation

By the Component SDK SAP is supporting Customers and Partners in fulfilling of their specific needs which cannot be offered in the delivered standard. SAP wants to assure good support of beta participants by communities, knowledge transfer and direct contacts to development units. For this reason, we can only accept a limited number of participants into this beta program, so pre-registration does not guarantee acceptance into the beta. The following criteria will be used to select beta participants:

  • Clear project plan with assigned resources in the project timeframe
  • Clear goal of the project – what business need will you address by the beta program
  • Clear focus of the project – how and what do you want to develop based on the Component SDK
  • Acknowledge about the given timeline – can your goals be fulfilled in the given time?

System landscape requirements for Component SDK beta participation

A live implementation SAP HANA or SAP Netweaver BW is required to participate in the beta. Those system can be used as data sources for components created by the implementations.
